A gem from the Spanish Basque Country
A bit of history…
Balmaseda is the oldest town in Biscay. Founded a long time ago, it quickly gained importance as it became a strategic commercial and customs centre.
The city preserves many vestiges of its medieval past : cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, an atmosphere from another time...
It also experienced an industrial boom, particularly in textiles. Today, you can still visit La Encartada Fabrika-Museoa, a museum that traces this history.
Why visit Balmaseda?
- An important heritage
It is an open-air museum where you can admire historic buildings such as the Church of San Severino or the Horcasitas Palace, or stroll through the narrow streets of the city center.
- A nature
Surrounded by mountains and forests, the Spanish city offers hiking and outdoor activities to suit your tastes. The Kolitza peak is a popular destination for walkers.
