    • The Makila, the Basque walking stick revisited by Talaia in the Basque Country

Impossible to cross the region without coming across the famous makila which means stick in Basque, an object of great cultural value found in the city as well as in the Pyrenees mountains. Based in his Talaia workshop-boutique in Anglet, between Bayonne and Biarritz, Éric shapes and creates high-quality objects with ancestral and personalized know-how. Discover his world without delay and fall for his unique makilas in the Basque Country.

Makila, a true tradition preserved by a passionate craftsman in the Basque Country

The walking stick is a major symbol in Basque culture since shepherds have used it for hundreds of years all day long. A fatigue stick for resting, defense against wild animals or guidance for oxen and sheep, it includes several functions and remains the essential element for shepherds in the mountains. Often passed down from generation to generation, the Makila is today a practical object, but also a decorative creation once the hikes are finished. Discover the 100 % Basque and 100 % authentic Makila made by Éric in Anglet, a high-end product in his image while respecting Basque traditions.

The Makila, a walking stick personalized by Talaia in Anglet

In his Talaia workshop-boutique, Éric works only with quality materials and shapes tailor-made makilas according to your desires. Passionate about Japanese techniques, it is only natural that he integrates Yakisugi into his reinterpretation of makila, which consists of burning wood to protect it from worms and give it a pretty caramel color. Sanded then oiled, the hardened ash wood reveals its veins, offering you a unique personalized object. The absence of a tip allows you to use it every day with a rubber tip for hard or wet floors. The pommel cut from stainless steel can be engraved, as can the wood of the cane which does not have a handle. Available in 5 sizes, the Talaia makila is a high-end creation adapted to everyone according to their desires and needs. Let yourself be tempted, bring back a traditional souvenir from the Basque Country.

Shepherd's Umbrella, a quality and artisanal product made at Talaia in the Basque Country

A true emblematic object of the rural life of shepherds monitoring the flocks, the shepherd's umbrella is today the symbol of a traditionand endures over time, preserved by craftsmen. This is the case of Eric, a passionate knife maker who develops his art and his creations down to the shepherd's staff, which he reinvents as a shepherd's umbrella. Discover its unique and atypical universe in Anglet, between Bayonne and Biarritz, you will fall for its quality products.

The Talaia shepherd's umbrella is unique in its kind since it was born from the association of the Talaia walking stick and the umbrella of Hervé and Christophe Panto, enthusiasts who have passed down their know-how for 3 generations. A thick cotton canvas, 9 rattan ribs, a burnt ash wood pole and a buffalo or manech horn pommel, these are the characteristics of an authentic shepherd's umbrella. These criteria are respected with the Talaia shepherd umbrella with the handle which is even marked with the 7 bands representing the Basque provinces. Fall for this object of art and decoration imagined with 4 hands in the Basque Country.

Shepherd's umbrellas, 100 % Basque and 100 % authentic, are available in 5 colors with 3 different pommels to choose from : black horn, Manech horn or bone reminiscent of ivory. It is also possible to order your custom shepherd umbrella and have a symbol, initials or logo engraved on the pommel, as well as a phrase on the brass ring. Bring back an ancestral memory of your trip to the Basque Country with a functional and symbolic shepherd's umbrella imagined by a passionate craftsman.
