    • Art'zain, a restaurant where the terroir is at the center of the cuisine in the Basque Country

Locavores, this is a term that perfectly defines Henri, Alexandra and their team, gastronomy enthusiasts who love to take your taste buds on a journey at any time of the year. Located in Irissarry, a charming village 20 minutes from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and 40 minutes from Bayonne, the Art'zain restaurant welcomes you for lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, and for lunch on Sunday. Book and take the time, the time of the moment…

Art'zain, local cuisine to simply taste in the Basque Country

Originally from Macaye, it was quite natural for Henri Amestoy to return to settle in the Basque Country after traveling across France. After

Some work with local artisans, the Art'zain restaurant opened its doors in 2016 in a magnificent residence made of stone and exposed beams.

You will be welcomed in a warm and friendly atmosphere, in the “Maison” of Henri and Alexandra.

Sit in a refined and elegant room with woody notes, to enjoy authentic cuisine made from fresh and of course local products. The terroir is highlighted through personalized recipes, offered à la carte or in the form of a menu including the Iratzea menu where you will let yourself be carried away. Surrounded by local producers, the cooks adapt to nature and change the menu approximately every 6 weeks depending on the seasons and production. Color, flavor and pleasure, this is the perfect combination brought together in the refined dishes served at Art'Zain.

Art'Zain, a passion shared by professionals with big hearts in Irissarry

Cooking is more than a passion for Henri and Alexandra, it represents their values and expresses their pleasure in welcoming you in a restaurant as at home. Art for the art of receiving, zain which means guardian in Basque and art'zain for the term shepherd, a tribute to the father of the chef Henri Amestoy, this is a beautiful definition for these two lovers of the Basque Country. The cuisine of the chef and his passionate and talented team is even rewarded with a Bib Gourmand and a green star ( sustainable gastronomy) in the 2024 Michelin Guide, as well as the Vignoble & Découverte label encourages their promotion of the Irouléguy vineyard. Take the time to enjoy a moment of pleasure at the Art'zain restaurant.

New Year’s Eve dinner at artzain. Beautiful restaurant, nice decor and cozy atmosphere. On the menu trout gravlax or creamy chestnut gizzard cromesquis....I opt for this dish, a treat! A friend opted for the trout gravlax and was disappointed with very little smoked trout on the plate and the piquillo ice cream which outweighed everything...a shame because visually it was quite successful Note that as an appetizer we had a garlic pudding and mimosa egg....The pudding was full of oil and the mimosa egg had no pep Here we go with the scallops, Jerusalem artichoke and black pudding. Good, rather tasty dish but lacking a little “twist” Then comes the “kriaxera” duck and there is total disappointment. Shredded duck too compact, much too compact. Ravioli dough too thick, sweet potato chips too little crispy and like the fatty pudding, a trip to the oven to dry them would have been great because the taste was there. But above all, this dish was terribly dry, no sauce or maybe what a shame. We finish with a Russian in the style of the chef, with a rather tasty yellow kiwi compote and a vanilla cream with very little sugar, which is quite good and very light. Unfortunately this desert does not make us forget the total failure on the previous plate Top service The three waitresses were super friendly and very professional. Thank you for welcoming us this evening of the 31st!

Restaurant located in a small Basque village with magnificent exterior architecture. The interior is also very pretty with a superb floor. The chef offers you local, simple and very refined cuisine with perfect taste. The presentation of the dishes is also pretty. The wine list is affordable. The waitresses are attentive to your needs and the service is simple and efficient with very kind people. We have been there several times and will definitely go again.
