Couteau Basque Arts and Crafts in Anglet

Christophe Lauduique created the Atelier Couteau Basque two decades ago.

Fellow cutler, blacksmith and craftsman , respectful of ancient gestures , historian of knives and makilas , Christophe makes knives in the purest artisanal tradition from raw materials (horns, wood, steel).

For several years, he has now been accompanied in his work by his wife, Séverine, who is responsible for shaping the majority of the horn and wood handles.

Christophe's craftsmanship expertise and his attachment to careful work allow him to create magnificent, unique pieces that are, each time, a reflection of his art.

It is not uncommon for workshop customers to bring their own materials, for example two branches from the cherry tree from their garden, and ask the cutlery team to make them table knives!

At Couteau Basque, the forge glows red and the anvil resonates under the impact of the hammer. Because Christophe forges damascus, sculpts stainless steel and shapes suminagashi.

Far from the widespread modern assembly practices, which consist of assembling a kit of spare parts purchased in distant and industrial companies, Christophe and Séverine offer work that goes completely against the grain of this period of “doing it quickly” and in quantity. Because their knives are made from A to Z. Each step is the result of meticulous hand work where the tool and the machine are never independent.

The Couteau Basque cutlery will welcome you from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
